The Ottumwa Symphony Orchestra is excited to present a wide variety of musical offerings for the 2019-2020 season that will surely ‘whet the appetite of the ears’. We start with our October concert entitled TAPAS! As the title suggests, we will serve a number of smaller works that will encompass a mini travelogue. One will taste music from Italy to Austria to Mexico to Spain to America, with special vocal solos by our own Dennis Willhoit! Megan Hofeldt and Kris Dewild will be playing a selection by Howard Hanson.
On February 29, we will kick off the new year with Magic of Music! Mozart’s “Magic Flute Overture”, and Johnny Mercer’s “Old Black Magic”, as well as works by Beethoven, Bartok, Holst, and Vaughan Williams that will undoubtedly cast a glorious spell on all who attend. Dr. Jones and John Miller will be featured playing the Deiter bassoon duo. AND magic tricks that will prove the hand is quicker than the eye! The concert will showcase up close magic performed by Bill Bowman, both during selections and during the intermission. And in homage to the volatile weather we Iowans have been experiencing, Cloudy With a Chance of Music will grace the stage with offerings of Strauss “Thunder and Lightning Polka”, “Winter” from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons featuring our Concertmaster Nancy Gaub, and Rossini’s signature composition, “William Tell Overture” with it’s famous storm section and “Lone Ranger” finale. We will also feature the winner of the Young Artist Competition, and as a special treat, Ksenia Nosikova will again showcase her terrific artistry performing the Piano Concerto by Rimsky-Korsakov.
